How to make Rava Appam(Gab Gota): in 6 easy steps.

Rava Appam (also known as Sooji Appe, Gab Gota or Appe Gulla) is a South Indian breakfast dish made using semolina (also known as rava or suji), yogurt, and various other ingredients. It is a variation of the popular South Indian dish called Appe or Paniyaram, which is typically made using rice and lentils.

To make Rava Appam(Gab Gota), semolina is mixed with yogurt, water, and other ingredients such as chopped onions, green chilies, ginger, and coriander leaves. The mixture is then left to ferment for a few hours, which helps to make the appams soft and fluffy. The fermented batter is then cooked in an Appe Pan (a special pan with small round cavities) until golden brown on all sides.

Rava Appam(Gab Gota) is usually served with coconut chutney or tomato chutney and is a healthy and filling breakfast option. It is popular in the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala in South India and is also known as gap gota in some regions.

Rava Appam, also known as Sooji Appe, Gab Gota or Paniyaram, is a delicious South Indian snack that is easy to make and perfect for breakfast or as a tea-time snack.

Rava Appam(Gab Gota) Ingredients:

  • 1 cup semolina (rava or sooji)
  • 1/2 cup yogurt (dahi)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds (rai)
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
  • 1 tbsp oil for greasing the appam pan

Make Rava Appam(Gab Gota)) in 6 easy steps:

Step 1: Prepare the Batter

In a mixing bowl, add semolina, yogurt, and water. Mix them well to make a smooth batter. Ensure that there are no lumps in the batter. Cover the bowl and let the batter rest for 20-30 minutes. This resting time will allow the semolina to soak up the liquid, making it soft and fluffy.

Step 2: Add the Seasonings

After the resting time, add salt, sugar, and baking soda to the batter and mix well. The baking soda will make the appams fluffy and light. In a small pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let them crackle, then add chopped green chili and sauté for a few seconds. Add this seasoning to the batter and mix well. Finally, add chopped coriander leaves to the batter and mix well.

Step 3: Heat the Appam Pan

Heat the appam pan on medium flame. Once the pan is hot, add a few drops of oil to each cavity and spread it using a cotton cloth or paper towel. This will ensure that the appams do not stick to the pan.

Step 4: Pour the Batter into the Appam Pan

Pour the batter into each cavity of the appam pan, filling it up to 3/4th level. Do not overfill, as the appams will rise and expand while cooking. Cover the pan with a lid and cook on low flame for 2-3 minutes.

Step 5: Flip the Appams

After 2-3 minutes, remove the lid and check the appams. Once the bottom of the appams is golden brown, flip them using a wooden skewer or fork. Cook the other side for another 2-3 minutes, until it is golden brown as well.

Step 6: Serve Hot

Once the appams are cooked on both sides, remove them from the pan using a skewer or fork and transfer them to a plate. Repeat the same process for the remaining batter. Serve the Rava Appams hot with coconut chutney or tomato chutney.

Tips of making Rava Appam(Gab Gota) :

  • Use a non-stick appam pan or a cast-iron appam pan for best results.
  • Do not overheat the appam pan, as it may burn the appams.
  • You can also add grated carrots, chopped onions, or grated coconut to the batter for additional flavor and texture.
  • Ensure that the batter is not too thick or too thin. It should have a pouring consistency.
  • If the batter is too thick, add a little water to adjust the consistency. If it is too thin, add a little semolina to thicken it.

Conclusion:

Rava Appam(Gab Gota) is a delicious and healthy snack that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With this easy-to-follow recipe, you can make fluffy and tasty appams .
